Let me share some of my stats, I hope these will give you some encouragement

From October 2009 - January 2010:

October: $2,491.06
November: $1,336.79
December: $2,502.56
January: $739.41
Sponsorship & Licensing sales are not included, these are only the mochiAds revenue. I know there are developers that earn more than this (Nitrome guys, Ninjakiwi, they are probably making 10 times more), it's all about the quality of your games and how you are distributing it.

My tips:

Quality, the game you are designing can be simple, but spend as much time polishing it as possible. This includes balancing, bug fixing, art, overall game performance. Make your games fun and addictive.
Distribution, Mochi distribution is awesome! but that is not the only one available, I also use FlashGameDistribution.com and also upload my games to some big portals (NG, Kong). If your game is fun and addictive, it'll go viral...then you don't need to worry about distributing as much.
Use Mochi Live Update! Damn I love this feature sooooo much. Every time we fix a bug, we only need to upload it once to mochi...then let the system do your dirty work. Before this we have to contact every site our game is on just to let them know that there's an update. By fixing bugs quickly, you'll keep players happy and they'll continue playing.
Change Your Preloader Background! Well...this is my own personal opinion, I think first impressions are important. I hate looking at the default mochi preloader, the one with the blue background...So I often close a game before it finishes loading. If you have some extra time, make some decent image and replace that damn blue background!
Edit - Display Multiple Ads I forgot to mention this...try displaying click away ads in strategic spots in your game (just dont over do it, it will make things uncomfortable to your players), this will give you more impressions/session and will give you higher click through rate.
I hope these will help...Gd luck!

Edit - One more thing, we usually spend 1-3 months to develop our games. Infectonator was done in 1 month or less (we were submitting it for the 60sec monthly contest...and didn't win), but we ended up having a huge hit...then sponsorship offers starts to flow ^.^ - I guess I have to thank Mr. Shen for that :D
