how to make your raygun silver/chrome in blender

IMPORTANT TO GO DOWN TO UPDATED TUTORIAL BELOW FIRST AND JUST USE THIS TOP SECTION AS NOTES....
To turn your extruded object to gold. The problem I was having before is that I had no nodes in the shading tab.

So, make sure your shading tab is selected. then select the material icon that looks like globe. and press the box that says ‘use nodes’ on the right side of screen... but make sure your object is selected... i tried to do this tutorial a year later and couldn't figure out why I couldn't find the 'use nodes' box... it was because my model was not selected.....Update.... this wasn't working because the background turned black so gabe hit that circle that looks like bubble and selected Shader editer and did all this from there.
I don't know if the below two lines apply, just go down to updated tutorial.....
Change base color to yellow. Then adjust your roughness and metallic when the nodes appear

NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU SELECT YOUR OBJECT BEFORE YOU ALOT OF THIS STUFF.
ALSO HIT ALL YOUR TABS AND GLOBE WORLD VIEWS TO SEE DIFFERENT OPTIONS

Updated tutorial:
Im going to change the rings to metal now so first thing is to make sure they are selected.
for metal reflection to work, hit the camera icon....higher above globe and material icons....... switch from evee to cycles.... drop down on right.... evee is poor mans version of cycles. only choose cycles when you want to see what the final version will look like
mess with your roughness, lighting and metalic until it looks right

changing background:
First before all that select world icon for environment( this is only for background editing, it has nothing to do with your model/object), select circle next to color and select environment texture. then click open and select image.
To romove background to see your object by itself, go to dropdown menu and middle left and select world view and detach line from color to color in the nodes

Now I want to add metalic material to the rings around gun. switch back to object mode in the materials and shading...below your main view.
do the same steps as before when you changed to gun metalic, just do one ring at a time, i tried all three before and i had too many programs open so it didn't work. close and re - open your blender file again and close all programs your not using. here are the steps again anyway..... make sure your in object mode in dropdown meny on middle left, select your ring and hit the plus sign and then New, then when nodes appear change color then bring metalic all the way up and turn your roughness down.

.make anything with 5 tools in blender...how to make a marker and raygun. WITH UPDATED INSTRUCTIONS BELOW

 UPDATED INSTRUCTIONS.... MORE STUFF ADDED:

he removed the top and bottom faces of box. then he selected the four edges and did a bevel tool. a box should appear after you perform first bevel. pull it til it overlaps. then in the box add up to eigth segments and hit the clamp overlap box which basically turns it into a cylinder. You can also mess with the other perameters in this popped up perameters box to incave, arch, and bow any edge you select by messing with the profile adjustment, but you have to have 6 or so segements to get affective arch or bow.
next do a merge because the clamp overlap created extra vertexes. hit A to selct all and M to bring up the merge window. i think it merged automatically to the set peramiters and tells you how many vertexes it got rid of. but you can make the region bigger to weld more vertexes.
next we do extrude. first I made the cylinder taller. then hit E to extrude and hit S to scale and move the polygons inward then release and hit E again to extrude new polygons upward. Hold down the ctrl key though to make it go straight up. keep doing this process til you get desired shape.
Next we want to cut a line our faces around the top of the cap of the pen where making. Hit control R and hover your mouse at the spot you want to cut, a yellow line will be shown, you can add multiple cuts by rolling the scroll wheel but we only need one for this. click to cut then move up and down to cut where you want it to cut the click again.
The cap of the pen has a flat spot on the side so we shift select the faces you want to flaten then press S to scale, then hit x to lock it on x plane then hit zero to flatten. This all has created a flat spot on the side of your pen cap... hit x to lock on x plane and drag it out to desired spot.
It was suppose to just extrude the polygons under where I cut it but mine has an angle at the top, but thats fine cuase it still looks good. for the next step I just hit ctrl R again to perform another cut so I can extrude the clip.
Now we want to put the clip on that flat side of the pen. Hit ctrl R again to perform cut on that part you just extruded then select the faces and hit e to extrude those down to create clip.
Now to make the ridges in the cap. ctrl r.  drag them up then hit esc to exit out of tool. s to scale and z to lock on z plane. bring them down. grab by hitting G, then z to lock in then move them up.  ctrl b to bevel while everything is still selected. in the perameters though it was still set to 8 segments, you don't need that many, bring it down to one. hit e to extrude and s to scale, hit shift x  to control the scale along any plane wheather its z or x.

To select a ring around any ring of edges, hold down alt key and click on desired edge ring. To ring edges the other way just go to select, loops, edge loops

to fill in the hole at the top of the pen we will use the grid fill. type F3 to bring up search, type grid and select grid fill. My f3 doesn't work so just go to edit and select operator search. A perameter box popped up on the video but its not doing it for me so gabe told me to go to faces and select grid fill from drop down then the perameter box popped up for me. leave span on 8. mess with offset if needed. select simple blending.

next we want to make our object not so polygonish....

I switched to object mode first.... you may not have to do this. Right click on object and select shade smooth. Then click on wrench icon to add a modifier. select subdivision surface modifier. change viewport to 2.... I think thats just like ading more nurbs in 3ds max

Now to get rid of blobby look we need to add bevels on all edges where there is basically a sharp angle. First go back to edit mode. To do this we select bevel modifier... same place you got subdivision surface modifier. once you have the bevel modifier in your stack...... there is an up and down arrow on the modifier, hit the up arrow to put it above the subdivision surface modifier, if you don't do this your model will not look right. set the limit method to angle. The next tutorial where he makes the atari joystick it would bevel any edge that was 30 degrees or more, make sure you keep that number in mind when doing this because you can adjust it. Then go back to object mode to see results

To make the rings around the raygun. go to Add, Mesh, circle. hit tab to switch to edit mode then hit e for extrude and hold down z or x to extrude along any of those axis's
